Do we need to live in the Sunset High School Boundary to register and play for Sunset Youth Basketball?

How many teams?

We are planning to field teams at the 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade levels. Some grade levels will have both "a" and "b" teams, which will be determined at tryouts and also dependent upon BSD's ability to provide enough gym space to support practice needs.

What is the registration fee and what does it cover?

The season registration fee ranges from $450-$750 depending on grade level and it helps pay for gym space (practice time) and gym monitors, insurance, tournament/league fees, coaching and clinics, use of necessary uniform for the season (collected at the end of season), shooting shirts,  administration fees, and all other necessary costs to run the organization.  

What do players need to provide?

Each player should have a good indoor basketball they can bring to every practice clearly marked with their name.  Each player will also need to wear proper basketball shoes and a water bottle.

Do players need to attend both tryouts for their age group? 

Yes!  If you have special circumstances that prevent you from attending both tryout dates, please let us know ahead of time.

Can parents stay and watch tryouts? 

No.  Parents watching puts additional pressure on the athletes, so we will have closed tryouts.  Our goal with evaluation & placement is to find a team where your daughter can be competitive and contribute to the team's success!

Will players be cut after tryouts? and how does that happen? 

Each team will have a roster size of roughly 9-11 players. 

Unfortunately this does mean that we have to cut during the process of forming teams. After tryout evaluations, we will privately message each family within 48hrs with their team placement. For older grades (7th & 8th), team notifications may happen in person on the last day of tryouts.  If your child doesn't make a team, we will make sure to provide you with information about alternative options in the area.

What is the time commitment for the season? 

Each team will have 2-3 practices each week (7th & 8th will try to hold 3 practices weekely as often as possible) and they will start in mid-November.  Tournaments start in early December (dates/locations will be communicated after the coaches meeting) and run through the first week of March. Each team will have 30-40 games (6-8 tournaments, Salem State Tournament, and potentially scrimmages or league games).

Are there additional cost once the season starts? 

The Sunset Youth Basketball registration fee is all-inclusive — covering all games and tournaments for the season. We also fundraise throughout the year to help keep costs as low as possible.

That said, families should plan for a couple of out-of-pocket expenses:

• Travel & accommodations — families are responsible for their own transportation and lodging for out-of-area tournaments (such as Seaside and Salem)

• Spectator entry fees — most tournaments charge a gate fee for spectators, typically ranging from $10–$15 per person per day

• FALL OPEN GYMS BEGIN - Boys - October 4 | Girls - September 14

• TRYOUTS - Late October (Girls) | Early November (Boys)

• PRACTICES BEGIN - Week of November 9, 2026

• GIRLS PURPLE/WHITE SCRIMMAGE - November 27, 2026

• BOYS & GIRLS SMALL SCHOOL & "B" STATE TOURNAMENT (4th-8th B teams only) - February 19-21, 2027

• GIRLS SALEM STATE TOURNAMENT (4th-8th Division 1 & 2) - February 26-28, 2027

• BOYS SALEM STATE TOURNAMENT (4th-8th Division 1 & 2) - March 5 - 7, 2027

We are looking for volunteers to join our youth board. Below are the open volunteer positions for the 2026-2027 season:

• Uniform/Equipment Coordinator - handles uniform and equipment distribution and collection along with support from board of directors

• Fundraising & Events - Handles Annual Sunset Youth Basketball fundraising event along with ongoing fundraising and event efforts throughout the season. 

• Social Media & Photography - Handles weekly posts on Apollo Youth Basketball instagram account representing both boys and girls teams of all ages equally according to program social media guidelines.
